Salon Spotlight: Finding a Foreigner-Friendly Oasis in Osaka
If you’ve lived in Osaka for a while or are just passing through, you know that finding a hair salon that balances high-end skill with a welcoming atmosphere can be a challenge. I visited Merly, a salon located just a stone’s throw from Shinsaibashi Station, and I think I’ve found a new favorite.
From the moment I walked in, the experience was seamless. After tucking my bags into a secure locker, I was greeted by a stylist who was incredibly sweet and immediately began speaking to me in English. Even though I’m familiar with the local language, I really appreciated the gesture, it instantly takes the “salon anxiety” out of the equation for many foreigners!

The Space
The first thing you notice about Merly is the scale. Unlike many of the more compact “hole-in-the-wall” spots in the city, this place is spacious and airy.
Family Friendly: They even have a dedicated kids’ play space, which is a rare and thoughtful touch for parents who need some pampering time.
Comfortable Seating: They have a large, plush sofa area for those waiting.
The Service & “Survival” Snacks
The hospitality here is top-tier. Once I was settled in my chair, I was offered a choice of drinks (coffee or tea) and some sweets.
I was there for a major transformation that took over five hours. Since I’d managed to skip both breakfast and lunch that day, I was starting to lose steam, but the staff was so attentive! They noticed I was hungry and kept refilling my snacks to keep me going. It’s those small, observant details that turn a good appointment into a great one.
The Pricing Strategy
One interesting thing to note about their menu is the pricing structure. Unlike many places that offer a “first-time discount,” Merly seems to prioritize long-term loyalty.
First Visit: Your initial appointment is slightly more expensive.
Repeat Visits: The price actually drops for your second visit and beyond, making it a very sustainable choice if you’re looking for a regular stylist in Osaka.

The Result
Was the five-hour wait worth it? Absolutely. The result was exactly what I asked for, and the quality of the work is stunning. If you are looking for a salon in Shinsaibashi that is spacious, English-friendly, and genuinely cares about your comfort (and your snack levels!), I highly recommend giving Merly a try.
